A JOURNEY OF READING पढ़ने का सफ़र CH. 01

For generations, a journey through India began with a platform, a book, and the familiar sign of A.H. Wheeler. What started on a railway platform in Allahabad in 1877 became part of the country’s railway memory — and of how India learned to read on the move.

A bookstall on the platform.

In 1877, a bookstall opened at Allahabad railway station. It sold what a traveller needed for the long hours between stations: newspapers, magazines and books.

The firm took its name from Arthur Henry Wheeler, a London bookseller. The business itself was built by Émile Moreau, with T. K. Banerjee beside him. Accounts differ on exactly how the founding roles were shared.

From one platform, the idea travelled along the line, wherever trains stopped and passengers had time to read.

Cheap, light and made for the train: Wheeler did not only sell books. It published them for readers in transit.

      OUR LEGACY हमारी विरासत CH. 05

More than a bookstall. A companion to the Indian journey.

A Wheeler stall was where a journey began to feel like one: the first newspaper of the morning, a comic for a restless child, a novel to outlast a delay.

Over generations those small purchases added up to something larger: a reading habit carried along the railway, from junctions to small-town halts.

      I · The founding

      A partner on the platform.

Accounts describe T. K. Banerjee either as Émile Moreau’s partner or as a co-founder of A.H. Wheeler & Co. Company records should settle which.

      II · Stewardship

      A family business.

Over time, stewardship of the company passed to the Banerjee family, who carried the stalls through a changing country.
